A dream of two bananas

One morning last week I had a particularly vivid dream right before I woke up for the day. We had two bananas left. One was a day or so away from being fully ripe, with a tiny hint of green near the top of the peel. The other wasn’t quite to banana bread stage, but it was a little overripe, with ample brown interrupting the yellow.

Now Lea doesn’t like overripe bananas. She likes them from two days before they’re fully yellow to one day after, and after that she won’t eat them. I will eat bananas at nearly any stage of ripeness, and don’t consider them too far gone until they can’t be peeled and sliced reliably.

So in my dream I’m standing there looking at these two bananas, and I start to grab the riper one. But then I hesitated and thought “you know, if I eat the other one tonight, then I can have the riper one in the morning, because Lea won’t eat it.”

Now why would I dream that? That is exactly the opposite of how I would operate in real life. I would consider it fortunate that we’d each get one, not scheme to eat them both myself.

Of course, I had to tell her. And predictably, she was very much “oh, I see how it is!” It’s not.

But that did come out of my brain.
